How To Make Your New Home Feel Like You
Moving homes is a long and sometimes stressful process, and once you've got the keys, where do you start making it feel like yours?
For a lot of people, decorating and shopping is the silver lining at the end of a big move. For others, those boxes stay piled up in the spare bedroom until the time and pennies are available to tidy things up a bit.
Here are a few things to think about to make your new space feel like home.
Colour
Adding a bit of colour can liven up a room and personalise it with just one pot. Hardware stores display sample pots and cards for you to take home and experiment with. This is also a good starting point for choosing a colour scheme. If you know what colour your feature wall will be, you'll know how to match your sofas and picture frames.
Mood Boards
For you digital designers, Pinterest is a fantastic and free way to make an online board of ideas and colours. Using people's illustrations, images of their own homes, or products from different websites can help you visualise how you could put a room together.
Lighting
You've already thought about how to liven up a room, now add some lighting. Don't just think about what natural light you'd get throughout the day, think about the seasons too. What corners would be the darkest in the cold Winter evenings? How can you make that summer sun bounce into your entire living room? Small lamps are great for creating the mood, or for sitting down on the sofa to watch a film. Top tip: adding mirrors or light-coloured furniture can help make a dark room feel brighter.
Temperature
Do you have plenty of blankets for getting cosy at Christmas? Is there any furniture blocking your radiators? Which windows could you leave open for ventilation in the summer? Think about ways to let your rooms breathe, and keep the heat when you really need it. A basket of spare blankets under a side table would be out of sight, and out of mind, but ready to pull out when you need them. Mesh curtains across doorways in the summer can help let cool breezes back in, whilst keeping the bugs out.
Soft Furnishings
The devil is in the detail, and there is no rule about how many trinket dishes you can have on your dressing table! Popping into homeware shops can give you ideas for the tiny pieces missing from your puzzle i.e. candles, photo frames, jewellery stands, drinks trolleys, coasters, diffusers. Adding things that make it feel like you is the point. Make your home, feel more like you with the little things you love.
Second-hand
People are constantly flogging unwanted furniture and furnishings instead of sending them to landfill. Look at online marketplace's, inside charity shops and antique stores. Deceased properties tend to have furniture sets that are kept together when removed from the property, and there may be the exact side tables you've been looking for. Don't hesitate to grab some rubber gloves and disinfectant for something second-hand. One person's trash could be your treasure.
Plants
A quick google search tells you a whole list of what plants are best for homeowners. Whether you have never been able to keep one alive or you want to add a bit more colour to your windowsills, there is a plant for everyone. Top tip: for a bathroom window, get a spider plant that will love the moisture, and for your conservatory, get a chilli plant that will love the heat!
Safe Space
Of course, this is your home and your safe space, but which spot is yours? It could be a part of the sofa, or an armchair in the bedroom that you set up as a reading corner. There will always be one spot in your home that feels most comfortable for you. Add a small side table so you can rest your cup of tea and phone. Put the basket of blankets closer so you don't have to reach for them. Move the lamp to your side of the sofa to make the most of the light.
Tutorials
The internet has everything these days, so use it to your advantage! Look at tutorials for how to style a room, how to create a stamp to paint a nursery, or any other home DIY projects that could save you pennies in the long run.
Making your new home feel like you won't happen overnight. Settling in can take you a couple of months, or it could be one room at a time. The only thing you can do, is create a space that serves for and feels like you.
